Mono Lake
Mono Lake sits at the junction of Highways 120 and 395 just below Tioga Pass. It is one of the oldest lakes in the United States, dating back 700,000 years. It is extremely high in salt and alkaline because it has no outlet other than evaporation. As dead as it appears it is teaming with an amazing food chain that supports literally millions of water fowl. It is estimated that 85% of California's seagulls started their life here at Mono Lake.
